Ten o’clock. The sun came out from behind the rain. The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles

優しく雨ぞ降りしきる

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

そうして　ツバメたち

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,

そして　水たまりのカエルたち
夜にケロケロと鳴き
そうして　野生のスモモの木たちは
ビクビクと　おびえたように花を咲かせ

Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

コマドリたち　ふわふわした炎をまとい
低いフェンスにとまり
気まぐれを　警告するように口ずさむ

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

誰も戦争のことを知ることはない

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
